I recently got an email from someone who asked me for a list of what they referred to as the best weight loss foods.
At first, I honestly wasn’t sure what they meant. And the more I thought about it, the more I realized there’s probably two different things this person could have been looking for…
- A list of foods that will make you lose weight.
- A list of foods that are high quality, nutrient-rich sources of the protein, fat and carbs that will comprise your daily diet.
Since I always try my best to answer the questions I get as thoroughly as possible, I wrote back with a list of foods that fit BOTH descriptions. And since I figure many other people would be interested in seeing these lists, I decided to turn my reply into a full article. Here it is…
Which Foods Cause Weight Loss?
Alright, get your pen and paper ready. I’m going to give you a list of the best diet foods that will actually cause you to lose weight. Ready? Here they are:
No seriously… there really aren’t any. There is no such thing as a food that magically causes weight loss. There are no fat burning foods. Nothing like this actually exists.
I know, you’ve probably seen or read or heard otherwise, but trust me, whatever you saw/read/heard was pure bullshit. Here’s why.
There is only ONE thing that causes fat loss, and it’s a caloric deficit. As I explain in my guide to losing weight, a caloric deficit is when you eat less calories than your body burns. This then causes your body to burn your stored body fat for energy instead, and this is the one and only way fat actually gets burned.
Sure, the foods you get those calories from each day definitely matter in terms of your health, getting enough protein, fat, carbs and other important nutrients, hunger control, and so on. In fact, I recommend you try to get most of your daily calories from high quality healthy foods.
However, above all else, weight loss always comes down to calories, not the sources of those calories. Healthy or unhealthy, the “best diet foods” or the “worst diet foods,” total calories are what matter most for losing weight.
Which means, if you’re looking for the the best weight loss foods in terms of which burn fat or cause fat loss… you’re wasting your time looking for a silly myth. You might as well look for Bigfoot or a unicorn. You’ll probably find them before you find an actual list of fat burning foods that isn’t complete crap.
Which Foods Are Best For My Weight Loss Diet?
Now that the first possible meaning is out of the way, it’s time to cover the second… a list of high quality, nutrient rich sources of protein, fat and carbs for you to choose from when putting together your weight loss diet.
None of these foods will actually cause you to lose weight (only a caloric deficit will do that), but they will help control your hunger, keep you full and satisfied, and supply the various vitamins, minerals and nutrients your body needs on a daily basis for optimal health and performance.
High Protein Weight Loss Foods
As you should know by now, a sufficiently high protein diet is an extremely important part of every person’s diet plan. It plays a key role in appetite control and is the #1 dietary requirement for maintaining muscle while losing fat. For these reasons (and dozens of others), eating enough protein each day is crucial.
Here now is a list of some common high quality sources to choose from:
- Fish (all kinds)
- Meat (all kinds)
- Eggs/Egg whites
- Protein supplements
High Carb Weight Loss Foods
Despite all of the low carb diets and various crazy things you’ve heard about carbs… they’re really not that bad. Like I said before, there are no actual weight loss foods (meaning foods that cause fat to be lost). There also aren’t any foods that cause fat to be gained. People incorrectly think carbs somehow magically do this, but they don’t.
Eating too many calories is the sole reason for fat gain, and it doesn’t matter if those calories come from protein, fat or the supposedly “evil” carbs. Which means, as long as your calorie intake remains what it needs to be, carbs are perfectly fine to eat when trying to lose weight.
Here now is a list of some common high quality sources to choose from:
- Brown Rice
- Sweet Potatoes
- White Potatoes
High Fat Weight Loss Foods
Even though carbs took the place of fat as the nutrient that scares people the most in recent years, there are some people who are still afraid of it. Well, don’t be.
Like carbs (or any other nutrient for that matter), fat doesn’t make you fat. Eating too many calories does. And like protein, fat is an absolutely crucial part of every diet no matter what your specific goal is (lose weight, build muscle or just be healthy). It’s required by the human body in order for it to function properly.
There are however different types of fat that you need to pay attention to when choosing the best foods for your weight loss diet. Specifically, trans fat should be avoided completely, saturated fat (which is less scary than you think) should be eaten although minimized to some degree, and monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats (especially the omega-3 fatty acid) should comprise the majority of your daily fat intake.
Here now is a list of some common high quality sources to choose from:
- Fish (salmon, sardines, etc.)
- Fish Oil Supplements (One of the few supplements I recommend to everyone.)
- Nuts and Seeds (all kinds)
- Nut Butters (peanut butter, almond butter, etc.)
- Olive oil
Put It All Together
So, there’s your list of some of the best foods to choose from when putting your weight loss diet together. Will they burn fat? Of course not. Are there any so-called “weight loss foods” that will? Nope, that’s just silly nonsense.
Ignore that stuff, and instead figure out how many calories you need to eat to lose weight (explained here: How To Lose Weight) and then pick your favorite foods from the lists above to get those calories from. Make sure you don’t exceed that ideal intake, and positive results are guaranteed to follow.

Under the umbrella “Alkaline diets“, you will find various names of diets as; Alkaline diet, Alkaline ash diet, Alkaline acid diet, and Acid ash diet. The ground on which these diets are build upon is that certain foods which they comprise can affect the pH or acidity of the body, helping to prevent the onset of diseases and even serve as remedy for them. An argument is raised if the alkaline diet really have an impact on weight loss, let us take a look at a deep insight on the issue.
in 2010, Robert Young wrote a book title “The pH Miracle”, and it created a mark. This was followed by a picture that Victoria Beckham tweeted with the Alkaline diet Cookbook in 2013, and Kate Hudson’s book in 2016 “Pretty Happy Ways To Love Your Body” that increased the hype of the alkaline diet, and interest for this style of eating. Adding to its health benefits of protection against cancer and arthritis, what brought it to limelight was the universal health interest that is always at the peak..weight loss.
According to the claim of this diet, acidity causing foods can lead to increased risk of diseases and an alkaline diet cleanses and protects your body from such risk. Alkaline diet allows you to eat:
- Raw Foods
- Plant Proteins
- Fresh Fruits and Vegetables
- Alkaline water
- Green Drinks
- Foods that cause an acidic environment that must be avoided:
- High Sodium foods
- Processed Cereals
- Cold cuts and processed meats
- Peanuts, Walnuts
- Oats and whole wheat
- Pasta, rice, bread, packaged grain products
- Caffeinated drinks and alcohol
The idea is that foods that produce acid ash lead to the breakdown of bones to offset the extra acid in the body, leading to an increased risk of osteoporosis, while alkaline ash foods decrease the risk. This is based on a statement of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics published in the US National Academy of Science publication. This and many other science publications also claimed that a diet high in potassium and magnesium such as fruits and vegetables may decrease the risk of osteoporosis because of an increase in alkaline ash production. Recent meta analyses of this hypothesis have not found any significant correlation as suggested.
What is pH?
pH simply stands for potential of Hydrogen. It is the measure of acidity or alkalinity of a body on a scale of 0 to 14. The pH balance of the human body fails in the range of 7.35 to 7.45. Anything above that range leads to alkalosis and below leads to acidosis. Both of these conditions are potentially dangerous to we as humans. The mechanism of the human body checkmates this and ensures it does not occur. It does this by maintaining the acid-base homeostasis. So medically, there is nothing much you can do to contribute to this in terms changing your food and drinks.
Does The Alkaline Diet Really Work in Losing Weight?
The Good Side
Alkaline diet encourages high consumption of whole fruits, vegetables, and unprocessed foods, all of which are rich sources of fiber, minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants. These nutrients contributes immensely for a healthy body. Their positive effect for general health, heart health, diabetes control and weight management are well documented.
Processed meats and foods to do not have a major contribution to our meals or health. In fact, deviating from fresh food ingredient to packaged foods is one of the major culprit of the health problems we are facing today.
The Bad Side
Removing a complete food groups from your daily diet is not a healthy option. Each food groups have a particular nutrient they contribute to your body for it to function optimally. The alkaline diet cuts out protein rich foods, which is highly essential for our daily living. Poultry, fresh meat, and legumes are all important for not only their proteins, but for other essential nutrients like phosphorus, folate, and healthy fats derived from fishes.
The alkaline diet do not talk about a major factor for healthy weight loss and healthy living, which is “exercise”. We all know how important regular exercise is. all medical and health practices recommends 150 minutes of exercise every week. For a diet which is majorly targeted towards weight loss, it misses out on the most important factor.
Relating the alkaline diet to weight loss, you will discover that it is not sustainable because losing weight just once is not enough, we need to keep it off. This can only be achieved with a good diet and constant exercise. Cancer patients needs a nourishing diet to respond to treatments and cutting major food groups is not the right decision.
There is no short cut to good health, adopting a healthy lifestyle as long as you live is the only right decision.

The Zone Diet has a number of unique features that promote weight loss by altering your diet in careful ways, tweaking your exercise regimen, rebalancing your hormones, changing certain lifestyle habits, and even altering your behavior within a proper budget!
What is Zone Diet?
The Zone Diet has become a popular health trend in the past decade, and is particularly popular with those who do Crossfit and other intense workout / lifestyle programs. Unlike many other diet fads, the Zone is a program designed to optimize the natural hormone levels in our body, because they essentially control the way that our bodies behave, store fat, burn calories, and facilitate physical and mental activity. The Zone Diet consists of three lists: the Protein (lean proteins), Carbohydrate (primarily fruits and vegetables), and Fat Lists. The meal plan is based on specific amounts and balanced intake of these types of food spread out throughout the course of a day in order to keep specific hormones balanced.
More specifically, the three targeted hormones in the Zone Diet are insulin, glucagon, and eicosanoids. These are responsible for the storage of fat in the body, stabilization of blood sugar levels, and the control of inflammation in the body, respectively. If you are able to keep these key hormones at optimal levels, then not only will you store less fat, use energy more efficiently, and be mentally and physically fit, but you may even increase your fat-burning while you sleep! This diet is ideal for people who complement it with a set exercise regimen; the improvement in lifestyle it can bring is quite impressive, as millions of people around the world attest. Now, let’s take a closer look at more details of the Zone Diet for Weight Loss.
Zone Diet for Weight Loss
An ideal zone diet should comprise the following:
As mentioned above, the main focus of the Zone Diet is rebalancing our hormonal levels. Insulin, glucagon, and eicosanoids respond to the intake of certain types of food, and their regulation benefits from a balanced intake of lean protein, low glycemic load carbohydrates, and healthy fats. The Zone Diet isn’t strict in the sense of limiting your food options, but it is very focused on limiting the amount of certain types and the frequency with which you eat. This makes the Zone Diet much more appealing for many people, as they can convert their favorite foods into “Zone Diet-approved” food blocks and sizes.
The meal structure throughout the course of a day involves six meals (the standard three meals of the day, and then three snacks in between). Each meal will consist of a set number of “food blocks”. For example, a 2-Block meal for lunch would consist of two types of food from each list (protein, carbohydrates and fats); a 3-Block Meal would include three types of food from each list. By limiting the amount of blocks to a set number each day, you can generally keep your daily intake the same, and also spread your meals out, keeping your hormones balanced all day, rather than the fluctuations, peaks, and spikes that occur when three large, unregulated meals are consumed each day.
The optimal sizes of the diet allow you to punch in your personal statistics and have an optimal diet suggested for you. You can have the freedom of being “off” a diet for all intents and purposes, in terms of personal choice, but you need to stay dedicated to the program when it comes to portion sizes and amount of times you eat per day.
If you are able to rebalance your hormonal levels, you will increase insulin sensitivity, which reduces silent inflammation and prevents the development of diabetes, as well as reducing fat storage. When you consume carbohydrates, that is essentially packets of energy, and you want your body to release that energy steadily into your body. Glucagon controls the release of those carbohydrates, which can stabilize blood sugar and energy levels. This can improve your physical and mental ability, and prevent certain health concerns like diabetes, which is closely associated with obesity.
Weight Loss Booster
By combining the Zone Diet with moderate daily exercise (cardiovascular exercise for 30 minutes each day, as well as strength/resistance training for 10 minutes), you can improve the fat-burning abilities of your body. Your energy levels will remain high and your metabolism will increase, making your workouts more efficient and even helping you burn fat in your sleep!
Final Word of Warning: The Zone Diet is appealing for many due to the freedom of foods, provided they stay within the portion size and block ratios, but this is not an overnight solution. In the first few weeks of the diet, you may only lose a pound or two. However, you should remain dedicated to the program, as changing your hormonal levels and getting your body used to new demands and intakes can take time. Over time, your body will become more responsive, and the beneficial weight loss effects of the Zone Diet will be much easier to see.
